STRUCTURE
The Seniors Section is known as the – Windermere Aged Gentlemen’s Golfing Society or more popularly as the “WAGGS”, and membership is open to all male members of the Club who have attained their 60th birthday.
Membership numbers in 2012 stand at 90+ who pay an annual fee of £5 to be a member.

OFFICERS (2012)
Captain Cyril Hutley
Vice Captain Ian Lydiatt

Secretary Ian Lydiatt
Treasurer Nigel Lauder
Match Secretary Paul Nacey
Competition Secretary     Charles Flanagan

In line with the founding principals of the WAGGS, there is no official committee. All decisions pertaining to the on-going running of the Section are made by the Secretary in consultation with the current year’s Officers.
Any proposals for change can be made at the AGM of the Section which is held In November each year. All the Officers are elected or re-elected each year at the AGM.

WAGGS COMPETITIONS
There is a weekly “roll-up” from the beginning of October until the end of March.
Members wishing to play attend at 9.15 for a draw for partners, and the 1st Tee is reserved for the Section from 9.30 to 10.30.
Style of competitions change from week to week and are published in advance on the Section’s notice-board which is found on the right-hand side on entering the men’s locker room.
In the summer months the following “major” competitions are held. Trophies and mementos for the winners of these competitions are presented at WGC’s Prize-giving Night in November. Prize-winners are expected to attend.
May - Spring Meeting
May – Summer Medal (Qualifier)
September – Autumn Shield (Qualifier)
October – Ruby Trophy
October – Millennium Competition
A new competition was inaugurated in 2009 named “The Secretaries’ Trophy”. Points are awarded on a sliding scale to the first three finishers in every WAGGS competition throughout the year, with the aim of finding the most consistent player. This trophy too will be presented on Prize-giving Night.
In addition to the above, some 9-hole Qualifying Competitions are held. There are also on-going Pairs and Singles Knockout competitions held throughout the summer.  The Finals for both these competitions will be played on WGC Final's Weekend in September.
Also to be mentioned are two other more light-hearted competitions which are always hugely popular:-
The Scottish Challenge held in March, which is organised by Scottish Members and played for amusing prizes. This is followed by a convivial lunch.
The Turkey Trot is held in November in conjunction with a lunch and the WAGGS’ AGM. All competitors down to last place receive a “bottle” prize.

OPEN COMPETITION
This 4BBB competition is the main one of the year which is held in May, and is open to players aged 55+ from any club. Prizes are awarded in several age categories.
All WAGGS members are asked to support the Open as it is our main event of the year, and any significant surplus funds, after expenses, are presented to the Club.

MATCHES
The WAGGS play the following Cumbrian/Lancashire clubs both home and away during the summer months:-
Appleby, Barrow, Beckside, Furness, Grange-over-Sands, Kendal, Keswick, Kirkby Lonsdale and Morecambe
Before each match, members are invited to put their names forward to play in the team. If a match is over-subscribed, a draw is made to determine the players. Those unlucky in the draw are then given priority for selection if they enter for the next match in the calendar.
Two matches are played internally within the Club. One against the Juniors, and one against the Ladies. This match in particular is very popular and held in conjunction with a lunch.

SUMMARY
The WAGGS are an important and valued section within the Club, not least in their impact on bar and catering income!
They are committed to giving their members a pleasurable and sociable golfing experience, particularly when their more competitive days have passed.
When funds allow, they also feel it is part of their function to put something back into the Club, and over the last few years have contributed to the Club’s juniors and also funded the planting of rhododendrons behind the new pond on the 12th hole. Their latest project was to commission a stone plinth indicator beside the 8th tee, so that visiting golfers can identify the various peaks in what must be one of the most attractive views from a golf course anywhere in the country.
New members can always be assured of getting a warm welcome to the WAGGS, so if you are 60+ and would like to join, please contact the Secretary.
